Director of Perkins Library

Doane University invites applications for the Director of Perkins Library. Reporting to the Chief Information Officer, the Director provides the strategic direction of the Library and is committed to its role as a partner in the teaching, learning and research activities of a small university with multiple campuses and online programs. Doane blends the liberal arts and sciences with professional and graduate studies for both traditional and non-traditional students. The Director is responsible for the leadership, management, and assessment of library services for these diverse constituents.


The Library supports the mission of Doane University by providing exceptional academic resources and services in a creative, inclusive, and collaborative learning environment. Engaged library faculty and staff support the Doane community in their pursuit of intellectual inquiry, information literacy and the ethical use of information. The Director champions the Library's vision of empowering Doane's learning and research community with expertise, innovative services and spaces, and traditional and contemporary collections strengthened by strategic partnerships.


The successful candidate will have proven skills in planning, budget management, communication, supervision of staff, and collaborative decision making. They will work to foster an organizational culture of collegiality and service, and be knowledgeable of trends in libraries and higher education. The Director will have experience designing, delivering, and evaluating information literacy instruction through a variety of modes of instruction. They will actively seek out current trends and best practices in information literacy and library instruction pedagogy, and serve as an advocate for the use of the Library's resources.

This is a 12-month position. Qualified applicants will have access to a non-tenure track appointment with faculty rank. Review of applications will begin May 17 and will continue until the position is filled, with a target start date of July 1, 2021.


Essential Functions:

  • Librarianship
    • Serves as a collaborative liaison for select academic departments, promoting library services and collection development for subject areas
    • Develops and leads information literacy instruction through multiple modes of delivery (ground and online) as part of a team of three faculty librarians
    • Provides in-person and online research assistance to students and faculty
  • Strategic & Library Management
    • Coordinates library planning and assessment in alignment with the University's academic goals
    • Has fiscal responsibility for budget preparation and administration
    • Responsible for developing a collaborative team within the Library and promoting communication between the Library and the greater University community
    • Represents the Library on key University committees
  • Development
    • Supervises and encourages the development of professional and paraprofessional staff
    • Maintains an active presence in professional organizations

Essential qualifications

  • Minimum Master's degree from an ALA accredited institution
  • Experience within an academic library, with a minimum of three years in increasingly supervisory or leadership roles preferred.
  • Proven experience in strategic visioning and planning
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated experience in designing and carrying out information literacy instruction through multiple modes of delivery
  • Commitment to advancing the goals of diversity, equity, and inclusion within the Library and the University overall


Preferred qualifications

  • Experience serving as a liaison to postgraduate programs such as MBA or EdD, and/or providing reference and research assistance to students in such programs
  • Experience with current archival practices in the preservation and conservation of historical materials
  • Experience as the system administrator of an integrated library system, preferably OCLC's WorldShare Management System
