Doane University is seeking a collaborative and innovative academic leader to serve as the Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences, located in Crete, Nebraska. The college has 78 faculty in 23 departments. The Dean is the chief academic officer and administrative leader of the College and serves as a key member of the University leadership team. The Dean will provide the leadership, management, and oversight for the identification, development and support of high-quality academic programs. This involves coordinating curriculum development, program assessment, academic standards, faculty development, institutional research, and accreditation.

Founded in 1872, Doane University is a nationally ranked liberal arts University with a College of Arts and Sciences, College of Education, and College of Professional Studies. The residential campus is located in Crete, Nebraska, with additional campuses located in Grand Island, Lincoln, and Omaha. Doane University offers undergraduate and graduate degrees and serves both traditional and nontraditional students. In 2016, it was named one of the best small college workplaces by the Chronicle of Higher Education. Position Responsibilities:

  • Articulates and promotes internally and externally the value of a liberal arts education in the arts, humanities, social and natural sciences. Further articulates and promotes Doane University's mission to prepare students for lives rooted in intellectual inquiry, ethical values, and a commitment to engage as leaders and responsible citizens in the world
  • Promotes academic freedom and shared governance
  • Leads strategic planning efforts within the College and collaborates with internal constituents to consistently apply policies and support the University's strategic plan, mission, and vision
  • Provides administrative oversight for academic affairs
  • Cultivates productive relationships between departments and programs in the College, while also facilitating engagement with the other colleges and divisions in the University
  • Leads efforts to develop new academic programs and supports the development, evaluation, and revision of curricular and pedagogical aspects of degrees and courses within the College  
  • Fosters teaching, service, and scholarly activities within the College and contributes to the evaluation of the faculty with the College
  • Promotes opportunities for faculty and staff advancement and professional growth
  • Administers College resources, manages operations, supervises and evaluates personnel, and oversees budgets and facilities
  • Serves on College and University committees
  • Other duties as assigned by the Vice President for Academic Affairs

Position Requirements:

  • An earned doctorate with a record of achievement consistent with an appointment at the rank of Associate or Full Professor in one of the College's academic programs
  • Minimum of three years of academic leadership experience in an academic setting
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with a collaborative style of leadership conducive to working effectively with diverse populations
  • Entrepreneurial spirit for maximizing capacity in existing programs and creating new academic opportunities
  • Successful record of coordinating course development and instruction, curricular planning, and outcomes assessment
  • Ability to set goals and objectives, prioritize and plan work activities, and meet deadlines
  • Proven budget experience and ability to effectively manage resources
  • Ability to be an articulate spokesperson for Doane on a local, state, and national level
